A career as a Lafayette Police Officer The responsibilities of a Lafayette Police Officer are both exciting and challenging. Officers have the opportunity to work in various areas of interest such as Patrol, Bicycle Unit, SWAT, Field Training Officer, Traffic, technician positions, or as detectives investigating specialty areas such as Juvenile, Narcotics or Criminal. The ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief are obtained by a combination of requirements including a competitive examination and oral interviews. Increase in salaries and responsibilities that come with each promotion are further rewards of a successful career. ![]() Beginning a career Successful applicants who are hired as Lafayette Police Officers begin their careers with nearly a year of training as Recruit Police Officers. Each RPO must complete a 12-month probationary period and is compensated at the starting salary of $43,466. Read more about salary and benefits by clicking the link below. RPOs begin their "in house" training immediately with a 40 hour "Pre-basic" class. From there the RPO's advance into the field training program that typically lasts about six months. Depending on Indiana Law Enforcement Academy schedules the field training portion may be interrupted as the recruits are assigned to the Academy. Academy training consists of a 15 week course required by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. Course topics include Human Behavior, Criminal Law, Traffic Law, Firearms, Physical Training, Police Theory, Report Writing, Crime Investigation Procedures, Safety Practices, and many more.
